The Excalibur Phonics Project is a DfE funded Strategic School Improvement Fund project which commenced in November 2017, and will end in summer 2019. The £400,000 project works with 52 schools, in South Gloucestershire, Swindon and Wiltshire, through a collaboration of teaching schools including Excalibur, Nexus, Pickwick and Swindon. The participating schools were identified by the RSA and Local Authorities as eligible for additional support.

The Phonics Programme aim is to improve primary pupils’ mastery of basic phonic knowledge by developing speed and fluency, so that children become confident, mature readers with a passion for reading.  The schools involved have all benefitted from regular SLE support and from training of staff to take on the roles of Phonics Champion and Phonics TA in their schools.

73% of participating schools increased their Year 1 phonics screener results after only 8 months engaging with the programme.

To enable this a database of resources was developed to support the participating schools. Initially these resources were only available to the 52 schools in the project, but these have now been made available to all schools. The resources, which include training modules and downloadable resources for schools, have had a great impact in supporting teachers with assessment, professional development and parental engagement.
